Ted Kotcheff, a well-known Canadian director, died at the age of 94. He was famous for movies like First Blood, Weekend at Bernie’s, Wake in Fright, and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. His daughter, Kate Kotcheff, told the Canadian Press that he died of heart failure on Thursday in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, where he had been living. His son, Thomas, shared, “He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.”

Throughout his varied career, Kotcheff showcased a wide range of talents, from impactful television plays and low-budget films in the UK to popular Hollywood comedies and critically acclaimed movies. Kate described her father as an extraordinary storyteller and a dynamic figure who could tackle any project with skill.

Born in 1931 in Toronto to Bulgarian and Macedonian immigrant parents, Kotcheff grew up in Cabbagetown. After completing his English literature degree at Toronto University, he started working with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in the early 1950s. Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to London in 1957, where he directed various TV plays, including adaptations of classic works.

In the 1960s, Kotcheff transitioned to feature films, starting with the comedy Tiara Tahiti. He gained widespread acclaim for The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. His later works included the action film First Blood, featuring Sylvester Stallone, which was a major hit and led to sequels. Following some less successful projects, he returned to television in 2000 as an executive producer and director for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where he worked for 12 seasons. Kotcheff is survived by his second wife, Laifun Chung.

One of the ways young people help the environment is by joining and leading movements. For example, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) brings together young people from more than 140 countries to protect nature and take part in global meetings. In the UK, a new branch of GYBN works to help young people influence national decisions about biodiversity. Another important example is the Fridays for Future movement, started by Greta Thunberg. These movements show that young people can make governments and companies take responsibility for their actions and push for real change.

Besides global movements, many young people also take action in their local communities. They organise clean-up events, plant trees, and start campaigns to protect nature near where they live. Many of these projects become successful thanks to social media, which helps young people share their ideas and inspire others. In addition, more young people now understand that environmental problems also affect human rights. For example, poor communities often suffer more from pollution and climate change. Youth are now working to make sure that environmental protection is fair for everyone.

Finally, young people are working with adults, experts, and organisations to find better solutions. For instance, the Environmental Law Foundation gives legal advice and works with students through law clinics.
